After being awarded a free kick inside their own half the players of Wigan Athletic made their way forward for the long ball up-field. Maynor Figueroa had other ideas.

The Honduran International left back, having spotted Stoke 'keeper Thomas Soronsen off his line, dispatched the ball goal wards and scored one of the best Premier League goals in history. Despite being from 60.59 yards however, it was only the third longest goal in the Premier League and only the second longest free kick. So just what are the longest goals in the history of the best league in the World?

Longest Free Kick

Back in the 2006/07 season, the then Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson scored from a free kick taken from just outside of his area. Punting the ball forward towards the Watford penalty area, Robinson then watched on as the ball eluded his attacking team-mates as well as the Watford defenders, before bouncing over the head of fellow England 'keeper Ben Foster and into the net. Robinson's 84 yard record strike will certainly take some beating as he became the third goalkeeper to score in the Premier League.

Xabi Alonso and David Beckham

Xabi Alonso had already scored from his own half in 2006 after scoring from around 64 yards against Luton in the FA Cup, when he repeated the feat (and distance) in the Premier League against Newcastle at Anfield. At the time the Spaniard's strike past Steve Harper became the longest in Premier League history beating David Beckham's goal past Neil Sullivan of Wimbledon on the opening day of the 1996/97 season. The 50 yard goal from Beckham held the record for over 10 years before Alonso's strike eluded the tumbling Newcastle number 1. This goal still stands as the longest goal scored in open play.

Maynor Figueroa Goal

The goal from Figueroa to put his Wigan side 2-1 up was not enough to win them the game as they had a late penalty saved by the beaten Sorenson to come away with a 2-2 draw. Speaking about the goal, the Wigan Athletic Manager Roberto Martinez told the after match press conference:

"It was a special moment, wasn't it? You need to have a certain kind of arrogance even to try something like that and a touch of genius to pull it off. Only the great players think they can perform such feats and, because of his attitude and his skill, Maynor has the seeds of that greatness in him."

The Stoke goalkeeper added:

"It was a one-off, a once-in-a-lifetime thing. You think perhaps you should not have been beaten from halfway but credit him for striking the ball as well as he did."
